Remedies For Morning Sickness
There are many useful remedies for morning sickness available. Most of
them probably don't work or are only effective for certain types of
women.
Throughout my research and my own pregnancy, I have found at
least 10 different reported cures or home remedies for morning
sickness. These include:
- Acupressure by wearing sea bands
- Herbs such as Anise, Fennel, Ginger Root and Peppermint
- Vitamin B6 Supplements
- Preggie Pops
- Sniffing Lemons
- Keeping hydrated
- Eat more snacks including dry crackers
- Hypnosis
- Anti-nausea medications
- Avoid greasy and fried foods
Some of these morning sickness remedies will work better than others.
The three that I have tried and tested are Vitamin B6, snacking on dry
foods and plenty of water.
I'm sure the other methods are useful too,
but I didn't try them or they weren't useful for my morning sickness.
Vitamin B6 Supplements
Vitamin B6 can help you keep food down and feel less nauseous during
your first trimester of pregnancy when you are most at risk from
morning sickness or nausea, vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) as it is also
known.
You need to take it three times a day to get a high enough dosage to
prevent your sickness so I would recommend talking to your doctor about
how much you should take.
Taking too much could harm your baby and also
cause you numbness or even nerve damage.
Some healthcare professionals also advise you to take Unisome with your
Vitamin B6. I never tried this because it can make you drowsy and I had
to go to work throughout my pregnancy.
Frequent Snacking Throughout The Day
Eating regularly throughout the day can prevent you from feeling sick.
I always had a little lunch box containing crackers in my bag.
Try to
stay away from rich, greasy, fried or spicy foods. These can aggravate
your stomach and cause queasiness.
I found the best foods for my
queasiness were bland dry foods such as cereals, potato chips,
crackers,
Jell-O, rice cakes and plain sandwichs.
More Remedies For Morning Sickness
To Get Rid Of Nausea...You'll have to make sure that
you're eating enough for
yourself AND the baby. Your doctor can tell you what to eat (and how
much) depending on how far along you are with your pregnancy.
Eating
too little, and then waking up with an empty stomach, is the primary
cause of nausea and vomiting in the morning.
Your doctor may also recommend munching on something
before getting up from bed, just to ease your queasy tummy and make
your first trip to the bathroom vomit-free. Crackers are almost the
universal recommendation...just go for the unsalted ones if your
doctor advises against salt.
To Get Rid Of The Bad Smells...Since your body
produces much more estrogen during
pregnancy than otherwise, your sense of smell tends to become more
powerful.
And that can be a bad thing, since the smells you disliked
before you got pregnant can smell even worse, causing nausea and
headaches.
The key is to get rid of the smells from your home, and
replace them with more agreeable scents.
Air fresheners, scented oils
and candles, and other pleasant-smelling items around the home can
minimize the bad smells. Fruity scents, like lemon and citrus, are
all popular remedies for morning sickness.
To Get Rid Of The Headaches...Raging hormones and
the stress of pregnancy make for a
nasty combination, and headaches and migraines are often the result.
You can take acetaminophen if your doctor approves it, but there are
safer, more natural pain relieving methods out there, too.
Case in point - breathing exercises.
Most headaches are
caused by a lack of oxygen in the body, causing the blood vessels in
the head to dilate and constrict. Deep breathing relieves headaches after
a few minutes.
You may also try cold showers, since cold water
constricts blood vessels.
If you like compressions and massages, feel free to ask
your partner to help you out with these. You can also try new exercise
routines, such as walking, Tai Chi, and Yoga. You'll take in more
oxygen, you'll grow stronger, and you'll become more resistant to
illness.
To Get Rid Of The Mood Swings...Another problem
caused by hormones and stress are the
dreaded mood swings. It's no fun when you're moody, both for yourself
and your partner (and maybe even the baby, too).
That's why it's best
to minimize the stress around you and doing so can actually be
fun!
Start by adopting a slower, easier pace to life. Look
for soothing music to keep you company throughout the day.
If you've
never tried it before, then Yoga, meditation, or prayer can help soothe
your nerves and prepare you for motherhood.
These are just some of the best remedies for morning sickness out
there. Find the ones that work for you
and take control of your pregnancy!
